Dr. Richard King

Sad news came this week: Adriane’s uncle, Richard King, passed away on Saturday of pneumonia, a complication of ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease). Richard was a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh School of Dentistry and a veteran of the Vietnam War as a member of the Army Dental Corp. After his discharge from the Army, he opened his own dental practice in Hampton, PA, where he served the community for 34 years. Uncle Rick is survived by his wife, Gwen, his parents, Joseph and Mary, his son, Brian, his daughter, Laura, and his brother, Joe.

Post-Gazette Obituary

Uncle Rick was able to make it to our wedding, so I was able to meet him then. He wrote out messages to Adriane and I on a small whiteboard: “May God bless you and keep you” and “Beautiful couple”. By the second time we saw him, about 7 months later, his ALS was advancing and he had difficulty communicating. ALS does not affect cognitive ability, so uncle Rick was fully aware of us, our conversations, and his surroundings during our visit. You could tell by his eyes that he was really alert and sharp still, but just couldn’t respond.

Please pray for the King family. Uncle Rick’s symptoms began only a year ago… this was so swift. Kind and understanding words can help, but really they need the loving and compassionate hand of Jesus on them. Pray that they would feel His presence, that they would be given time to mourn uncle Rick, and that, as time passes, deep emotional healing and peace would come.
